Is tap water the cause of your skin issues?
You may have tried everything essential for healthy skin - diet, stress reduction, exercise, removing chemicals from your skincare and household items, but have you tried eliminating tap water?
The water coming out of your tap could be causing chronic skin conditions such as acne, dehydrated skin, rosacea, inflammation and extreme skin sensitivity, to more common conditions such as dandruff, dull and dry, damaged hair. When we look at what's in your tap water, it's not surprising why you can have such reactions.
Considering the above conditions tap water can cause your skin, imagine what it's doing to the rest of your body when you drink it.
Hydration is our most powerful antioxidant system.
Chronic inflammation results from accumulating oxidative compounds in every area of your body. The immune system, bloodstream and cells. Without high quality water, you can not flush out toxins and reduce this oxidative stress.
Water is the fuel for maintenance and regeneration, and when it's not feeding and cleaning your cells appropriately, they decay.
What we accept as 'normal' ageing in this society is premature ageing and directly linked to chronic dehydration. It's not surprising when you consider than 99% of us is comprised of water molecules.
Water is not the only answer to hydration, and there are many ways to hydrate your cells. If you want to find out more, we've written previously about it here.
If you're drinking tap water, not only are you not hydrating your cells and reducing oxidative stress, but you're stripping your body of essential nutrients. Put simply - your tap water is unsafe and detrimental to your health far beyond disrupting your skin and scalp.
Up to 2000 kinds of toxic chemicals can be found in your water supply
These inorganic minerals are suspected of aiding degenerative diseases, such as hardening of the arteries, arthritis, kidney stones, gall stones, glaucoma, cataracts, hearing loss, emphysema, diabetes, and obesity.
So what's in your tap water?
Pesticides, Herbicides and Fertilisers. All are toxic and highly harmful to human, animal and environmental health. They further wash into our oceans, damaging reefs and marine life. Many skincare and home cleaning products find their way into our tap water. These toxins are carcinogenic for your body and terrible for the skin. They can cause contact dermatitis, rashes and triggering scalp conditions and eczema and many other possible conditions we're not yet aware of.
Fluoride - There are so many studies highlighting the damaging effects of it on our health. For one, it is a neurotoxin. Fluoride is linked to thyroid hormone insufficiency in pregnant mothers (which can lead to problems in their unborn) or altering children's dopamine levels, vital for behavioural development. It affects our pineal glad. The primary function of the pineal gland is to synthesise and secrete the hormone melatonin. Melatonin performs three leading roles - maintain the circadian rhythm, regulate the onset of puberty in females, and help protect the body from cell damage caused by free radicals. It was only until the 1990's, a British scientist, Jennifer Luke, discovered that fluoride accumulates to strikingly high levels in the pineal gland. More in the pineal gland than any other soft tissue of the body. The fluoride accumulation forms phosphate crystals, creating a thick shell around the pineal gland called calcification. Once the pineal gland is calcified, it causes it to become in/underactive, resulting in less melatonin production.
Most spiritual traditions have linked the pineal gland directly to our awakening and connection to the divine. Activating the third eye with the Chakra system is equivalent to activating the pineal gland. For Buddhists, the pineal is a symbol of spiritual awakening. The Taoists consider it as the mind's eye or heavenly eye. Ancient Greeks believed this gland was our connection to thought itself. In Egypt, it is referred to as the Eye of Horus. Fluoride in tap water and toothpaste is harmful to the pineal gland. Likewise, food laden with pesticides, preservatives and chemicals causes the pineal gland to become sluggish and lose its vitality and power impairing our connection to the divine and our own divinity.
Hard water - Is water with high mineral content. Tap water containing calcium, lime, and heavy minerals break down your skin's PH balance and microbiome, causing irritation, redness, triggering eczema, building upon the hair causes breakage and dehydration. All tap water is hard water.
Pharmaceuticals - Medications find their way into tap water. Antibiotics, mood drugs, hormones, etc. All toxic contaminants and horrible for your health and skin.
Micro Plastics - Recent studies into water contamination have found micro plastics in 83% of tap water samples from major cities worldwide and 93% of samples from the world's top 11 bottled water brands. There is an observable correlation between plastic substances in the blood (specifically BPA and phthalates) and higher rates of certain health issues: chromosomal and reproductive abnormalities, early puberty, childhood obesity, and increased blood pressure.
Chlorine - Causes itchy, red, irritated skin, breaks down the protective acid mantle PH balance on the skin and scalp, dehydrates hair, strips colour, and causes severe damage to follicles, among other possible side effects.
All these toxins from tap water can accumulate in your body.
Filter your water
There are many water filtration systems you can get for your home - bench top, under the sink or systems which run your entire house's water supply. Ideally, you want to look at filters made from carbon. Carbon filters remove all pesticides, herbicides and chlorine. Look for carbon filters made from coconut shells as these are sustainable. Additional filters are required to remove fluoride and nitrates. Reverse osmosis systems are one way you can do this.
If you want to feed and enliven your cells, then look at structured/easy water. A great podcast on the benefits of structured water can be found here. We're big fans of Tracy Dhus podcast 'Hydrate' for deep dives into the power of hydration and water for health.
If you don't have a house filtration system, replacing your shower head filter to soften the hard water is relatively inexpensive. You can simply use a bowl of filtered water to cleanse your face. Think of all this as an investment, like anything to do with your health. I like to remind myself that nothing is more expensive than being sick.
