Healthy body, healthy skin

We are spinning on a rock in infinite space with no idea where we came from or where we're going.

Given the circumstances, it’s not that much of a stretch to say that we’re spiritual beings having a physical experience. And, as physical beings, to make the most of our time, we must look after the physical.

Exercise, movement, whatever connects with you, is essential for physical health and vital for your skin health.

From running to dancing in your living room, skipping in heels, yoga or good old fashioned 80s power walking. There is no prescribed movement, just so long as you move. You could say it’s a universal law; our bodies are designed to be in motion.

Movement helps your skin in multiple ways. Increasing your heart rate improves blood circulation, delivering oxygen and nutrients to your skin, keeping it healthy, promoting collagen and new skin cells for that youthful glow. Is it me or do you look 10 years younger? Also, sweating can help clear out your pores, just remember to make sure you take off any makeup before exercise or anything that can clog your pores. Don’t worry, you look beautiful.

Improved blood flow whilst exercising helps carry away waste products and free radicals from your cells. Think of exercise as cleansing your skin from the inside out.

Movement also encourages diaphragmatic breathing, which delivers even more oxygen to your skin. Perhaps most importantly, diaphragmatic breathing reduces stress by triggering the release of endorphins.

All this deep breathing and sweating results in healthy, natural ageing.

Less known discoveries about longevity are those looking at resistance training in particular. Lifting weights is shown to slow down the ageing process dramatically. This is due to addressing a process known as "sarcopenia". In short, sarcopenia is where your muscles become smaller and weaker with age. After about 50, your muscle mass decreases at a rate of 1–2% a year! The good news is that with resistance training, you can dramatically slow this process by over 90%. People 70 years and above who do weight training show a remarkable reversal of 179 genes associated with age. Youthful genes that are down-regulated with age are up-regulated with resistance exercise. Further, the length of the telomeres of those who do some form of resistance training can reflect people 10 years their junior.

And, don't think you have to spend your days in the gym looking in the mirror, studies show that as little as two hours a week have a significant benefit.

Another benefit for your skin is the lymphatic drainage that occurs with movement.

Your lymphatic system is pivotal for radiant skin. Think of it as your filtration system and garbage bin.

When the lymph is congested, it can cause dry skin, blemishes, rashes, eczema, psoriasis, cellulite and the build-up of free radicals, all leading to accelerated ageing. Unlike the heart, the lymph has no pump to keep it moving, so it relies on us for assistance. Keep your lymph circulating with yoga, dance, running and stretching, to name a few. The more waste your lymph system can eliminate, the healthier you and your skin will be.

Stay young and have healthy glowing skin. Get out there and move. You do look ten years younger!
