Love your skin, inside and out

It's a literal statement to say that your body is made from what you eat and drink. When you consider this, every meal becomes the foundation for the architecture of your body.

"Everything you eat becomes a part of not only your inner being, but the outer fabric of your body as well. The healthier the foods are that you consume, the better your skin will look," says Samantha Heller, MS, RD, a clinical nutritionist at NYU Medical Center in New York City.

The relationship of your skin is a complex biologic landscape interconnected to your body's internal processes and organs - kidneys, liver and gut microbiome.

Foods

We live in a culture where unhealthy foods are considered normal. Processed foods full of refined sugar and salt account for 95% of the foods you'll find in the supermarket. Such foods break down your body and life force. These foods lead to disease and premature ageing and cause endless issues that present on your skin.

Foods, diets, hydration and the gut microbiome can all be complex subjects. That's why we opt for simplicity when it comes to food and hydration. Look to a whole food diet rich in vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, and fruit.

Look to a whole food diet rich in vegetables, nuts, seeds, grains, and fruit. The more variety, the better, as variety helps our microbiome thrive. For more on foods which help the skin, in particular, see here.

Our food and soil

Research has shown that our food is nowhere near as good as 50 years ago. Looking at nutritional data from 1950 and 1999 in 43 different vegetables and fruits found "reliable declines" in the amount of protein, calcium, phosphorus, iron, riboflavin (vitamin B2) and vitamin C. Average calcium levels in 12 fresh vegetables dropped 27 percent; iron levels 37 percent; vitamin A levels 21 percent, and vitamin C levels 30 percent.

It's estimated that some vegetables have lost 57 percent of their zinc - an essential element for the immune system, male fertility and collagen production for your skin. And, you can't simply supplement your way out of this, as we've discussed in a previous article

One study concluded that you would have to eat eight oranges today to derive the same amount of Vitamin C as our grandparents would have gotten from one.

Healthy soil = nutrient dense food = healthy people.

Dairy

Soil also has stored in it 65% of our planet's freshwater. Rich soils ensure adequate levels of groundwater and are also integral to the health of tropical river systems. Ensuring healthy soil also prevents the dangerous cycles of floods and drought that afflict so many regions in the world.

Water

Try and avoid dairy. Countless studies show that dairy interacts negatively with your hormones which can cause acne and psoriasis, to name just two. (1)

Sugar

Make processed sugar a rare treat. When we say 'rare', we mean never. If you'd like to know exactly what it does to your skin including breaking down your collagen, you can read about it here. Choose natural sweeteners like dates, monk fruit and maple sirup.

Chew

It's not just what you eat but how you eat, which can be overlooked, particularly in the modern world.

For your food to be digested properly, you need to be in a 'rest and digest state' and eat slowly. When food is chewed properly, the brain signals to release several digestive enzymes that break down food in the stomach, this is essential to how the body converts food into energy.

The more you chew, the smaller the particles become, allowing for maximum absorption of vital nutrients.

Hydration

Hydration is your most potent antioxidant system. It's the key to health, especially considering that your body comprises 96% water molecules. It's not as simple as drinking a few litres of water a day. It's about getting water inside your cells. Essential to your body's health and vitality for your skin. Not all water is the same, which we've written about previously.

When you learn about water, you realise that it's not just 'a drink' but the vital life force.
