The most important factor for healthy glowing skin

Healthy glowing skin begins and ends with your skin barrier function.

Most skin troubles are due to a damaged skin barrier function, and repairing it is the holy grail for the skin you want.

Let's start with what the skin barrier is.

Bare with me for a second - the skin barrier is the top layer of skin called the stratum corneum. It is microscopic—less than a fraction of a millimetre. But this tiny paper-thin layer plays a vital role as the protective barrier to your body's largest organ: the skin.

And what is the skin barrier made of?

In case you have this burning question, the skin barrier is comprised of fatty acids, dead skin cells, cholesterol, lipids, and ceramides (fat molecules that hold the skin cells together and help the skin retain moisture and allow for correct function).

What issues a damaged barrier function causes.

A weakened barrier function can contribute towards:

- Breakouts and acne

- Dryness

- Cracks

- Bumps under the skin

- Inflammation

- Infections

- Dermatitis, psoriasis, and eczema

- Sensitised skin

- Dehydrated skin

- Inflammation

- Increased risk of sun damage

So how do you protect your skin's barrier function naturally?

Start by removing harmful chemicals from your skincare and makeup. Get rid of any that contain synthetics, fragrances, and emulsifiers. You don't want them to call, write or message you again,

This might be the direct opposite to what you've been told in the past but, stop using moisturiser.

In most cases the only way to achieve the texture and consistency of moisturiser is to use synthetic ingredients which damage your skin barrier, block pores and can create breakouts and more inflammation.

Moisturiser further dries out your skin because your internal process of hydration is reduced. Your lipids produce and trap less water because they receive the signal of being moisturised externally.

The more moisturiser you use, the less moisture your skin will naturally produce. So begins a never-ending cycle of needing more moisturiser, and your skin becomes dryer and dryer.

Drink a lot of water

We can attribute up to 50% of ageing to chronic dehydration. To deeply nourish our cells and to care for our skin, we need to drink at least 3 litres a day, and that's not tape water. Tap water doesn't contain the essential electrolytes required for cell hydration. Ideally, you want your water to be filtered and structured. You can also eat your water with vegetables, fruits, and chia seeds.
