You might think of hyaluronic acid (HA) as supplying moisture for your skin but it is so much more.

It's one of the main elements that keep your body and skin youthful, it's what holds all of your connective tissue together. Without it, your skin loses its structure.

Like collagen as we age, our body produces less of it, that's why it's so important to boost and maintain the levels of HA in your skin.

HA is a very large molecule, as a result, it does not penetrate your skin and instead sits on its surface. It binds to water to maintain hydration, and links with other HA molecules to create a temporary barrier.

This issue with synthetic topical HA is that it draws all the moisture to the top layer of your skin, making it appear plump. However, that moisture doesn't get locked in and eventually evaporates, resulting in more dehydrated skin over time as more and more moisture is pulled to the surface, only to disappear creating chronic dehydration.

It's a short term fix that leads to long term problems.

What's worse is that in low humidity conditions, synthetic HA leaves your skin even dryer and accelerates transepidermal water loss (TEWL) just when you need moisture in your skin the most.

The skincare industry has tried to find its way around this issue by introducing synthetic low molecular weight hyaluronic acid (LMW-HA). So instead of sitting on the surface of your skin, it penetrates to aid your body's natural HA production.

Advertised as a better form of HA by the industry yet, there is a major disconnect between what the cosmetic industry says is true and what actual scientists say is true. [1]

Aside from misleading advertising, what is most concerning is that LMW-HA has been proven to be a potent stimulus for inflammation and scarring. While heavy molecular weight HA (HMW-HA) has been shown to mitigate the inflammatory response, it's suggested that HMW-HA promotes regenerative healing [2], LMW-HA increases the expression of inflammatory proteins.

There is ample evidence from human studies and biochemistry literature to support that LMW-HA is inflammatory, pro-fibrotic, and associated with adult scarring. [3]

So with synthetic HA you’re left with two options

1: HMW-HA, which will dry your skin out over time

2: LMW-HA which has been proven to induce an inflammatory response.

Enter Terra Toincs Cellular Hydration with its hero ingredient Cassia Angustifolia polysaccharides, which has been clinically proven to be a more potent hydrator than synthetic HA. [4] Cassia Angustifolia polysaccharides mimic your body's natural Hyaluronic Acid [5] and have many advantages over synthetic HA.

  • It has a small molecular size that penetrates deep into your skin to act from the inside out to work in tandem with your body's natural HA.

  • It's been clinically proven to be a more potent hydrator than synthetic HA and won't lead to TEWL but instead support your skin barrier in locking in more moisture.

  • It adjusts its water retention based on the humidity of the air, so your skin won't dry out or appear too wet.

  • It's clinically proven to have anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant and anti-bacterial properties, which can help speed the healing of minor skin issues and keep breakouts at bay. This is most important when considering the well documented issues with LMW-HA [6&7]
